Curtis and Co., tvaS charged with stealing a quantity of table cutlery, serviettes, pillow-slips, tablecloths, etc., the total value of £l9 19s, during the months of May and October last. It was stated that accused was employed at J. Curtis & Co. as head packer for 2 years. However, on relinquishing his duties on October sth, his employers found that a quantity of goods had disappeared. Acting on certain information, Detective Torrance finally Searched the house of the defendant, and found the | articles of which he was charged j with stealing. Accused admitted the theft to the detective. For the accused, Lewis, it was stated that he was & young mairied inan with three young children, and had apparently yielded to sudden temptation. “This constant thieving must be stopped,” said the magistrate. “In tuture, every thief I will send to gaol.” Lettis ttUs sent* enced to two month’s itnprifeonment -with bard labour. Chief-Detective Ward conducted the prosecution and Mr J. O’ Donovan appeared for the i accused.
