The first sales of timber by public tender, under the auspices of the pewly formed Forestry Department took "place last month, when some 18,500,000 super feet of milling timber of all kinds was disposed of to Mr F. W. Harris Daw, sawmiller, Nelson. Th e timber is contained in approximately 1,058 acres of State forest situated at Pakawau, Col. lingwood. The timber is to "be felled, branded and measured in the log before manufacture which is hoped will stop any waste of timber at the mill. One of the conditions of the sale is that, within five years five million feet, at least, of timber must be cut.
The attention of returned soldiers is drawn to the following: —Availability of 4 weeks privilege tickets is extended to the. 28th. February, 1921, after which date all travelling ceases. Applicants aftet the 30th. November must apply for tickets to—Officer in Charge of War Accounts and Records, Lambton Quay, Wellington" already issued for a lesser .period than four weeks so as to expire on 30tli. November will be extended to cover four weeks from date of issue, on personal application to the Railway Stationmaster, The euchre and dance in connection with the wind-up of the season’s tournaments held at St Mary’s Club last evening was a great success. Some eighty players competed for the valuable first prizes donated by Mrs W. Jeffries, the winner of these prizes were: Mrs Martin and Mr N. Tulloch respectively; the second prizes which were donated by 1 well-wishers of the Club were won by Mrs (1, Bell and Mr Sumner. After the supper adjournment Mr G. Howe, VicePresident of the Club thanked all those who patronized the Chib during the season, the ladies committee who supplied and took charge of the refreshment part, and those ladies who supplied the music for the dances. On bei half of his Committee he also returned their sincere thanks to those who donated prizes during the season, thereby sav ing the funds of the Club. The aggregate prizes for the greatest number of points scored for the season were then presented, Mrs W. Stewart’s prize, a georgette ladies’ blouse was won by Mrs A. Sumner; the gent’s prize a Bengali razor and strop, dohated by Mr W. Logue, was won by Mr G. Howe, who kindly donated this prize to the ladies’ committee to bo competed for again. The thanks of the Club are due •'to Messrs F. McGregor and Flewellyn, who chocked and compiled the aggregate points. Dancing was then indulged in to the splendid music supplied by Misses A. Daly, O. Breeze and N. Scott. Mr T. Heenan had charge of the floor,
