COAL FOR WINE. PARIS, Oct. 3. Though there are signs that Germany, influenced by President Millerand’s attitude, is preparing to resume the economic and" commercial discussions broken off earlier in the year, it is denied that M. Charles Laurent, the French Ambassador in Berlin, who has just, arrived in Paris, has brought any startling proposals from the German Government for the fixing of the extent of the reparations. The German proposals which M. Laurent has come to Paris to put before his Government are only suggestions for commercial exchanges, on the lines already laid down by the German Note handed to the Allies at Spa. German manufacturers want more French iron ore and German merchants desire to import French red and white wines, and especially champagne. It is interesting to note that the Germans, who at Spa emphasised that the French demands for coal would ruin them, now offer increased coal to France for a satisfactory solution of the iron ore and wine problems.
