Dec. at the request of the different Chambers of Commerce and other fin- ! ancial institutions, which are assisting the Government in the endeavour to provide on a voluntary ‘basis the amounts diow required to complete the settlement of our returned soldiers on tho land. The death occurred at Reefton on Tuesday evening of Mr John Watt, of Mawheraiti, after a long illness. Deceased, an ex-Sergeant of Police, was horn ot Auckland in 1855. He served in the armed constabulary, and went through the Maori War, and was mounted orderly to Colonel Roberts for fifteen years. From the constabulary he was transferred to the police force, being first stationed ot Westport, then Greymouth, Aliaura, Okarito, Helensville, where he obtained promotion to Sergeant of Police, then to Auckland, and finally to Rotorua, where he retired through ill-health. After leaving the force lie was iri business successfully at Matota, Auckland, Pnpakura, Helensville, nnd'Okarito, and a couple of years ago he bought the hotel and farm at Mawheraiti. He leaves a widow ond family of five sons—Harry, George, .Tames, John and Bert—and two married daughters for whom the greatest sympathy is expressed.
