Fender immediately attacked tho N.S.W. bowlin, hitting freely and vigorously all round the wicket. Smart fielding alone kept the scoring down. Fender was well caught by Collins at deep cover for 54. Tho innings then quickly ended. Ncav South Wales being 333 behind opened with Collins and Macartney. There were seventeen thousand present at the match after luncheon. Both batsmen, after luncheon, settled dowii to quiet and steady play. Eventually tliey assumed an absolute mastery Over the boAvliilg. Maeaitnej liberally interspersed his singles with hits to the boundary, all round the wicket. All the boAvlers Avere seemingly alike to Macartney. He reached his century in 142 minutes. Collins meanwhile, had combined a stonewall defence, with some vigorous driving in front of the wicket. Macartney continued to bat in enterprising fashion. He passed the 150 mark by hitting Fender for three successive 4’s to long-on and square-leg, and then Avith a late-cut. A moment later Macartney terminated a noteAvorthy innings in a remarkable contest, ho being given out leg before. Whfen the total reached 331, Gregory pulled Woolley to the long-leg boundary.
