S CULLING.

[PKIt PRESS ASSOCIATION. COPYRIGHT.! HANNAN DEFEATS FOGWELL. BLENHEIM; Nov. 20. The New Zealand Sculling Championship was rowed on the Wairau river this afternoon between W. Fogwell (holder) and P. Hannan (challenger). There was a three knot current and a strong headwind against the rowers. Hannan, won the toss and chose the inside position. From a splendid start Hannan drew away immediately, and soon obtained a two lengths’ lead. This order obtained, till the first bend was reached, when rough water was met with. Both men were rowing with a good swinging stroke. Hannan still kept the advantage, hut nearing the Wairau shed he struck a snag and momentarily lost ground. Coming to the half-way point, the wind and current drove the boats to the southern side. Hannan was here four or five lengths ahead. "Getting too close in, Fogwell fouled the hank, which checked his progress. ' Recßverinp he started after Hannan, reducing the gap to about a couple of lengths. Both men had quickened their stroke, Hannan responding .to every challenge. Coming into smooth water, Fogwell started to move up, and rowing a quicker stroke the Australian made effort; but Hannan kept his advantage, winning by a length and a half of clear water. Time 21.3.
