Both at once commanded an excellent length. There was determined and enterprising hatting. Until Hendren’s arrival the batsmen were ex-
tremely cautious. Gnly fifty runs resulted for an hour s play. Hendren immediately confirmed the favourable reputation preceding him. He tackled the bowling in aggressive fashion. There was. capital outfielding by New South Wales. This alone keeping Hendreh’s account down. The luncheon adjournment intervened with Hendren five short of half a century. Meanwhile Hobbs hoisted bis side’s century with a couple past cover. On resuming Hobbs opened out in brilliant fashion, driving forcefully to the off, with liberal .cutting through the slips. When 87, Hobbs placed Gregory into Kelleway’s bands at third slip but the chance was not accepted. Hendren at 67 ran out and attempted to steal a run and got out. Hobbs, exercising restraint, reached his century, and incidentally registered England two hundred. He was brilliantly caught and' bowled by Mailey when 122. This innings was almost faultless. At the tea adjournment the score stood at 7 for 228.
The attendance to-day was sixteen thousand. After tea Gregory went through the tailenders, taking three wickets with four balls-for no runs. Throughout the innings Gregory’s fast deliveries terrorized the batsmen. Russell got hit on the shoulder, Hobbs on the hand, arid Woolley on the thigh. Others were compelled to duck. Maily at one stago had taken no wickets for 58. Subsequently he bagged 4 for 5. New South Wales opened their - first.
innings disastrously, Macartney and Anrews fell to successive balls from Howell, with the board showing only five. Kellcway and Bardsley then played for safety.
