A cable message received from .Sydney reported the death of Miss Florence Young, the actress. The official count for the Southern Riding poll of the County of Westland takes place to-morrow at 11.30 o’clock. Mr T. R. Cliesterman, re-elected to the Westland County Council, returns thanks in this issue to the electors of the Central Riding. The official result of the Central Riding poll taken on Wednesday last, appears in this issue. Msesrs Cliesterman, Morel and Wells are the members duly elected.

The commercial reporter of the “Press” says: The manufacturing confectioners have again received sufficient supplies of sugar to keep them going, but nothing like what they require for normal trade. The Christmas demand fer confectionery is not being felt, and the factories are delivering as fast as the goods are made. Owing to short supply of sugar, no boiled sweets are being.made. To make 1 cwt of blackball, or other boiled lollies, a little over 1 cwt of white sugar is required, wlierea •. if the same quantity of sugar (1 cwt) is made into, say, caramels, the output would be about l£ cwt of the finished article. It is simply the policy of making the sugar go as far as possible that has compelled manufacturers to adopt these metljods.

A clause in the Appropriation Bill provided for a payment of £IOOO in addition to superannuation allowances to his Honour Sir Bassett Edwards on his retirement on or before January 31st next. Sir Bassett Edwards lias been granted twelve months’ leave of absence from his duties, such leave to commence early next year. He is entitled to the full salary of a judge for the period of such leave, but as during that period it would become necessary to make provisional and temporary arrangements consequent upon the number of the judges actively engaged in the administration of justice being thereby diminished, and as he has consented in lieu of taking such leave of absence to resign bis office, thereby receiving in lieu of full salary the amount only to which he is entitled as superannuation allowance, it lias been decided to make the grant above stated.

Tlie directors of the Westport Coal Company, in their annual report, say that the profit for the year ended September 30th, after providing for bad and doubtful debts, depreciation, and ai; charges, amounted to £36,230 4s 7d, to which has to be added £11,724 14s brought forward from last year, making a total of £47,954 18s 7d. An interim dividend of 6d per share was paid for the half-year ended March 31st, 1920, absorbing £11,250, and leaving a balance to be dealt with of £36,704 18s 7d. Out of this the directors now propose to pay a dividend of Is per share for the half-year ended September 30th, 1920, absorbing £22,500, to appropriate to the employees’ provident fund £IOOO, and to carry forward to next year’s account £13,204 Is 7d, making a total of £36,704 18s 7d. As' the insurance fund has been fortunate in escaping losses, the directors propose, paying a bonus of 6d per share from that fund. The mines and plant have been maintained in the usual state of efficiency. Many old residents of Hokitika and district will hear with regret of the i death of Mr J. H. C. which took place at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Walter Stone, Mt. Albert, Auckland on Saturday. The deceased who was a native of Hanover and in his 93rd year came to Australia in the early’ fifties. He returned to his native land to be married, returning to Melbourne in 1860. He thence came to Hokitika in 1865 'opening a business as a tailor in Revell Street which he continued ,for many years ultimately retiring in 1906 and removing to Auckland w'here he has lived ever since. He was a prominent member of the Pacific Lodge of Freemasons. Deceased had been in fairly good health until a few days ago. ‘ His wife predecased him in 1891. ■ Mr Schroder was one of those burnt out in the big fire in 1898 that destroyed the Manson block. He leaves a family of five—Mr F. Schroder of Hokitika, i Mrs J. Giese of Hokitika, Mr Henry 7 j Schroder, Mrs Walter Stone and Mrs Rarely 7-, all of Auckland. There are also twelve grand children and three great-grand children. The funeral took place this afternoon at Auckland.

The deceased was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, and 81 years of age and had been a resident of the town for a long period of years. Her husband predeceased her many years ago. She leaves a family of six, three daughters (Mrs-F. Hauop, Auckland, Mrs Bulford, Wellington and Mrs 0. Pfahlert of Kanieri), and three | sons, (Thomas in Perth, Michael at Inchbonnie and William in Hokitika). v Auckland Harbour Board debentures cannot be sold owing to the rate of interest (says Wednesday’s “Star.”) The Bank of New Zealand so notified the Board at its meeting last week, and the Board decided to adopt its committee’s report to the effect that a communication be sent to the Prime Minister pointing out that unless the rate of interest is sufficiently increased to create a sale of debentures it will be necessary to cease operations with regard to wharf' accommodation proposals, and that at the present moment there are three ten thousand ton steamers at anchor awaiting wharf accommodation, which is illustrative of the congestion which has prevailed during the last six months.
