• f AUSTRALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] ENGLAND V. VICTORIA. . MELBOURNE, Nov. 12. The weather was fine for the first day of the match between England and Victoria. The wicket was in perfect order, and the attendance was estimated at ten thousand. The Govern-or-General sent a message to both teams conveying best wishes for an enjoyable game. Mayne, who captained Victoria, opened the innings -with Park. The latter is a firm favourite for selection in the test matches. Mayne made 5, and then Parkplayed a ball that was off the wicket, and the wicket keeper, Dolphin took a smart catch behind the wickets. Park’s dismissal was without his scoring and thus caused surprise. Mills then helped Mayne in a nice partnership. When 63 had been added by safe cricket, however, Mills turned on to his wicket to glance a ball from Parkin. A confident appeal for l.b.w was allowed. Ransford was next, but was dismijssed without opening his scoring account, Woolley snapping up a beautiful catch in the slips. Ryder then came in, and lie cominenced briskly, giving promise of a fine innings. However, after scoring a run or two by delightful strokes, he too was snapped up by Dolphin, who "as keeping" wicket splendidly. When Parkin next bowled Mayne, I without any addition to the score, five of Victoria’s best batsmen were out for seventy seven runs and the visitors were i,n an enviable position. Mayne got his runs in fine style, and his total took seventy minutes in making. Lampard and Moves were then associated until the luncheon adjournment when the scores were 102, made in ninety minutes. This small score is hard to explain as the bowling looked easy. Moyes only made three after* lunch. He was succeeded by Lidlicutt, who with Lampard, batted splendidly, the pair punishjng all the howling alike. Both batsmen’s strokes were crisp clean and many faultless. Many of them were saved on the "boundary, the visitors fielding excellently. Play was delayed at 3.40 by a light rain and the adjournment was taken with the score 6 for 210. Lampa,rd 77 and Liddicutt 37, resumed at 4.5, Douglas and Woolley bowling ; and a light rain falling. Woolley’s j first two overs were maidens. The part- , nership of Lampard and Liddicutt i was terminated in an unfortunate manner. The latter in attempting to save the ball rolling on to the wicket, played on. His stay at the wicket occupied 83 minutes arid his display was patient, correct and chanceless, the partnership with Lampard realising 142 at a critical stage of the (game, which promises to put° to a test the hatting strength of the visitors. McDonald essayed big hitting, but did not stay sufficiently long to please the crowd, whom lie delighted with a fine on drive to the boundary before he was smartly caught at the wickets. Ellis followed, but was not troublesome and was out to a| dreadfully weak stroke. With Mullet in, Lampard forced the game, sacrificing his wicket. His masterful inning was resourceful and at times brilliant scoring well all round the wicket, his innings containing twelve fours, mostly from beautifully timed leg glances. A remarkably enthusiastic demonstration was accorded him at the close of the innings, in which the vistors joined. His time nt the crease occupied 305 minutes. He gave one chanco at 63. ! The visitors’ howling was ordinary. Woolley apparently was the best, although Parkin especially during a burst of early success,' was troublesome. With 25 minutes to hat the Englishmen opened with Hobbs and Russell to the howling of McDonald and Mull*" . VICTORIA Ist INNINGS. Mayne b. Parkin Park c. Dolphin b.
