CREW OBJECT TO SAIL. SYDNEY, November 6
Nine members of the crew of the Commonwealth steamer Bellata have been proceeded against on charges of disobedience and of combining to '*npede the navigation of the ship. They were convicted and received sentences of from four to twelve weeks’ imprisonment. The charge arose through the cook’s refusing duty unless an extre hand was engaged. Then the men refused to commence a voyage if they had to go without cooks.
The Seamen’s Union now threatens to hold a stop work meeting to discuss what action to take.

Judge lEdmonds has now decided on a course that will nullify the decision of the Progressives. He has decided to sub-poena fifteen members <;£ the Assembly to give evidence before the Commission inquiring into the members salaries.

A branch of the League of Nations has been established with the object of assisting to instal League as an arbiter of world disputes, and to foster mutual understanding and create a world organisation able to guarantee freedom, liberty and peace.
A TRAGEDY. SYDNEY, Nov. 9,
A tragedy is reported at Matron Creek at Altonville. While shielding his daughter from Hubert Joiner, a re. turned soldier and rejected suitor, who was endeavouring to shoot the former, Lewis Lambert, father of the girl was shot through the heart. Death was instantaneous. Joiner was found in
scrub with a gunshot 'wound in the bead. His condition is serious. BASIC WAGE. MELBOURNE, Nov. 9.
The Commonwealth public servants are agitating for a basic wage and have decided to inundate Parliamentarians with ten thousand letters to each member. The pestering will continue till the request is granted.

An amended list makes nine killed in the railway smash and two injured. Fireman Wilton was found dead, still hanging on to the brake. Another man named Meggs was pinned by the leg which had to be aniputated to enable him to be rescued.^'
