COUNTY ELECTIONS

Elections 'pt tlwee mejmbers each, for the newly formed Central and Sou-, them Hidings take place on Wednesday. The hours of polling will be d a.m. to 6 p.m. and polling booths will be open during those hours in all centres of the settled districts as advertised already. A poll for a Machinery or Roadmaking Loan plant will take place at the same time, and in addition to the Central and Southern polling booths, polling places will be open in the Northern Riding also over the same hours. The booths will extend from Otira in the north to Okuru in the south. The amount of the loan proposed is £3,000, the object being to purchase a loadmaking plant, including motor Lipping lorry, stone crusher, (with elevator) and a ioad roller. This plant when procured will lie used throughout the district, on the chief County roads, and will he available also for the expenditure of Government grants, money in connection with which cannot be spent now owing to the shortage of labor. The electoral roll to be used for the Loan poll is the combined rolls for the three Ridings of the County, and any elector, however, is entitled to one vote only, irrespective -of the number of times his name may be on the roll or different Ridings, and notwithstanding he may have a' plurality of votes for the election of members by reason of large rateable value. To carry the proposal in counties, it is necessary to secure at least threefifths of the valid votes cast at the poll, so that a pronounced majority in favor is necessary to secure the adoption of the loan. The polling booth in Hokitika will be at the County Chambers, and the results of the polling will be notified there unofficially on Wednesday night as the returns come in. The official count of the voting will not he till a| few days when all the district paper’s ) are to baud.
