I A meeting pi the Wanganui exe- : cutive of the P.P.A. passed a resolution denying the accuracy of statements made in the House of Representatives -by Messrs Holland find M’Callum ■ against the Rev. Howard Eilliott, and | challenging those concerned to repeat them outside the House ; further thalI lenging Mr Holland to prove that the ! agitation against the Ne Temere de,- ■ twee was the work of one man, or that his statement concerning Mr Elliott was not wholly unfounded. The Minister of Public Works, (the Hon. J. G. 'Coates) has made up his mind that it is not advisable to go on with 'the 'South Island Main Trunk Railway line from Blenheim. In company with Mr Furkert (Chief Engineer of the Department) he will, in the recess, go oiver the route of the line. Expert opinion is that , the original route proposed is not the best one, and that the line should go along the valley of the Wairau Mr Coates thinks it might be quite a good thing if the settlers and others interested agreed to construct tlieir own line up tlie Wairau VattSyt However, after he laid seen the country himself in company with the Chief Engineer, he will be better able'to say what line of policy should be adopted. A good deal of interest and some little excitement? was caused at the Wellington ferry wharf on Tuesday morning on the arrival of the Maori from the South (says the “New Zealand Times”). When tlie vessel had berthed tho passengers were temuorarily '■ prevented from landing, and a number of police officers went on board. By and by the passenfers were allowed to land, and sonie little time jater the officers of the law, escortipg a young man, came down the gangway, entered a motor car, and drove to the central station. It subsequently transpired that after the arrest of Matthews in connexion with the Timarn murder, on Tuesday night at Lyttelton, he\represented that another man who occupied a cabin on the Maori with him was an accomplice. Tlie Wellington police were acquainted by telegraph, and accordingly the young man was detained on the arrival of the vessel here. However, although he boarded the vessel at the same time as Matthews lie was able to give a satisfactory explanation of his identity, and his movements and he was no longer- detained.
