OTIRA TUNNEL
REPORTED “HOLD-UP.” CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. It is reported that work at the Arthur’s Pass Tunnel has been delayed through a shortage of cement. At last evening’s meeting of the executive of the Progress League the following telegram from Otira was read : “Held up by shortage oi cement. Can you do anything?” - . “1 think we can do a great deal,” said the President, (Mr A. G. Henderson). “It is a little distressing, after all we have heard and after all we have tried to do in regard to the tunnel, to learn that even a short delay should be possible through such a. cause as this. Coment is obtainable in the Dominion in sufficient quantities for the work, and it looks as if there has been bungling on the part of someone if the telegram is correct.” A member: Who is the telegram from ? Mr Henderson: From Mr Behan, presdent of the Tunnel Workers’ Union. It seems to be a serious matter, and I think we should make inquiries forthwith. It was decided that the organiser should take the necessary action to secure a resutnptoin of the work.
