The death took place yesterday of Mr John Hagland, a well known resident of Greymouth. He was 87 years of age, and leaves a wife, three sons and three daughters. Mr H. D. Haszard, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Canterbury, who has completed forty years in the Public Service is retiring on superannuation at the end of the present financial year. Mr Arnold Hansson, M.F., Chief Inspector of Forests of the Dominion is now on the Coast. Mr Hansson is making an examination of the forests and milling operations of Nelson and the West Coast. He arrived here yesterday accompanied 1 by Mr Gideon Anderson, Forestry Ranger for WestLand, and in the afternoon inspected the Diggers 'Sawmilling proposition at Back Creek. An inspection of the chief sawmilling centres is to he made, including a special visit to the Moana dis- j trict. Order early.—Advt. The Government Bill dealing with hospital and charitable institutions was reported on Wednesday by the Health Committee. The Bill contained a revised schedule of subsidies. This has been struck out by the committee, which in view of the complicated nature of the subject recommends that the Government should up a Commission during the recess to take the evidence of Hospital Boards, departmental officers, and actuaries, in order to arrange a fair basis of subsidies and to report to the Government and to Parliament. Mr W. K. MoAlpine, at the meeting of the Canterbury Progress League on Wednesday, complained of the daily overcrowding of the Arthur’s Pass train. Only three carriages were put on between Springfield and the Pass, he said, and the seating accommodation, especially for first-class passengers, was altogether inadequate, and many people, including women, had to stand. Another member said that on the previous day the accommodation sufficed for only half the people on the Pram. The remainder had to travel as best they could. The organiser was deputed to make enquiries and to endeavour to secure an improvement.
At Addington stock sales e on Wednesday there was a medium entry of fat pigs, ibut the demand was not so keen as at recent sales. Prices opened up on a basi of lid per lb., but firmed as the sale progressed. Values were as follows: —Choppers £8 to £l3; Light baconers £6 15s to £7 15s heavy baconers £B. to £8 135.; Average price per lb. Is; light porkers £4 10s to £5 ss; heavy porkers £5 15s to £6 ss; Average price per lb. Is 2lid to Is. 3d. One of the largest entries of store pigs of the season was forward, and the demand was strong. A good clearance was effected'. Values were as follows:—Best stores £5 ss. to £5 19.; Medium stores £4 10s to £5 45.; weaners 425. to . 48s; Sows m pig £l4 10s.
A very pretty wedding was celebrated yesterday morning by the Rev. Father Aubry, S.M., at the residence of the bride’s mother, Shakespeare Street, fGiieymouth, when Miss Cis Heaphy, eldest daughter of Mrs and-tlie late Mr E. P. Heaphy, was married to Mr Leonard F. Hogg, second son of Mr and Mrs J. R. Hogg of Dunedin. The bride wore a cream serge costume elaIwrately braided, and a picture hat of gold and blue tissue. She was attended* by her sister Miss Eva Heaphy as bridesmaid, who was wearing a grey cloth costume and jade liat.- The bride was given away by her (brother, Mr P. C. Heaphy, and Mr Geo.
