lACSTHALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION! DESCRIPTION OF THE RACE. SYDNEY, Nov. 3. The “Herald” in describing the Cup race says as the crowd of competitors and conditions were unequalled ill *the history of the race it was only fitting that the best horse in Australia should win. No result on the famous course ever provoked such a splendid enthusiasm. The pace at the commencement was extremely slow, Salitros first taking charge, passing the .stand with Poitrel ami Kennaquahair at the rear. By the riverside the three year olds Malurys, Salitros, Svce Knight and Erasmus made the pace a cracker. Tangalooma assumed eommnd—at the six furlong post, making a break. Salitros was immediately a beaten horse and dropped back. Clever Jim fail to the front at the turn'' but quickly vanished. Erasmus shot out and looked a winner, though challenged by Comedy Queen, Eurythmic and All Red. He forged ahead flattering his supporters who comprised half of Melbourne, but Poitvel made a run past Eurythmic and catching Erasmus at the half furlong post, won by half a length. Bracken rode a well judged race outside the field, avoiding interference. liair provided a’surprise. He seemed worn out and was second last till half a mile from home, lie then followed Poitrel through and would have gained a place if he had a little further to go. The “Telegraph’s” special says:--“The struggling mass of valuable horseflesh straining every nerve and muscle at the behest of the gaily liveried riders made a graceful sweep round the turn. Then the symmetrical little fellow came, cutting down the leaders till a mighty rear from thousands proclaimed Poitiel was the winner. Salitros immediately went to the 'front, and Killdrn pulling double to keep at at' the back of the field, Eurythmic dropped into the middle of the field. Ecarte was sixth an! Poitrel third last, with Kennequahair behind him. Poitrel had bumped' into a handy position at the mile post. At li mile post Eurythmic moved up rapidly to the accompaniment of roars it “Eurythmic walks in,' Eurythmic wins” but a small impudent chestnut dashed into the open and Eurythmic dropped back to Erasmus. As Queen Comedy led into the straight, Poitrel bounded I forward a compact ball of muscle galvanising the spectators into enthusiasm. The cheering, deafening, sportsmanship of those who had hitherto been partisans were forced to manifest itself, and the result was a regujar cyclone of encouragement accompanied Poitrel to the post.” CANTERBURY J.
