The family depends upon the cook and the cook upon her range, which is therefore the pre-eminent factor in modern housekeeping. It will pay to instal an up-to-date “ORION” Range in your home, for it will burn the hottest coal, the poorest lignite or wood with equally satisfactory results. RACING NEWS. ————- < - ' — f AUSTRALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] SYDNEY, Oct. 31. Tlie ‘Herald" describing the Derby states it was very rough, rounding the first turn and all the riders in the leading division eased up. There was much bumping resulting in consequence of the congestion. Erasmus and Syce were the chief sufferers. Salitros here went round the field and had the lead at the mile post and led for the rest of the journey shaking off Syce in the straight and Nautical’s good finishing run in the last furlong. Erasmus after striking heaps of trouble boldly dashed at the leader at the top of the straight, but petered out. Syce ran well, but weakened considerably in the last sixty yards. The “Telegraph” says Salitros at-no stage had a hard race or looked like being beaten. He went to the front at the bridge and galloped great guns when the straight was entered winning with a bit in by three lengths. The “Telegraph’s” special representative says the race was one of the roughest on record. Several horses, notably Erasmus, experienced a bad time. There was much bustling for positions before the first turn was reached. Hound the corner Salitros was sorely crowded, forcing the corner flag back almost in the i first furlong. Later there was a lot of roughing, apparently accidental, but sufficient to throw several out of their strides. Connel shot Salitros to the front at the back of the course, where he remained to the end of journey.
