Grade contest, being the only New * Zealand band present. They took first place for the sijght reading test and night quickstep. E. Schnaok, was second in the soprano solo, H. Osborne second in B Flat cornet, second place in Septette, first in trombone trio. MATTHEWS REMANDED. CHRISTCHURCH, November 3. Matthews appeared before the Court this morning charged with the murder of Clarence Edward Wagsta-ff at Timaru on October 27. He was remanded to appear at Timaru on November 11th. SUPREME COURT. DUNEDIN, Nov. 2. The criminal sittings opened to-day, / with four charges against six persons. William Clias Pitches, Hugh McAllister and William White were charged with forgfiing a document at Ophir purporting to be the will of George Henry •Reaper. They pleaded guilty. The Judge stated Pitches was really responsible for what was done. He was fined £2OO and the other two ordered to come up for sentence if called. Ernest James Taylor who pleaded guilty in the lowercourt to false pretences, was sentenced to two years on each of two charges, the sentences to he cumulative. He was also declared to he an habitual criminal.
