The Returning Officer for the County of Westland declares in this issue the election of three members for the Northern Riding of the County of West land; nine members constituting the Westland Electric-Power Board; six members for the County of Westland to the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board; and two members for the County of Westland to the Hokitika Harbour Board. Mr J .Miles Verrall, of Swannanoa, writes to the editor of the “Lyttelton Times” as follows:—A London telegram of October 19th says that the official price of gold is £6 Os 3d per oz. owing to fall in the New York exchange.” Another telegram of October 21st says: “The official price of gold to-day is £5 15s 3d for shipments to America.” I suppose the “official price” means the “market price.” According to Mcleod “the market price of gold is determined solely with reference to the price paid for it in bank paper.” If a man gives two £1 notes for a sovereign, it is the notes which have fallen, not the gold which has risen in price. The sovereign is the standard —not the “promise to pay it.” Obviously no man in his senses would give six sovereigns for an ounce of gold because the ounce is only 480 grains .while the fine gold m six sovereigns would weigh 678 grains. 100 per cent, fit—that s bow 1M PEY’S MAY APPLE keeps the constitution.
