PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
COST OF CAMPAIGN. AUSTRALIAN & N.Z CABLE ASSOCIATION] (Received this day at 8 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 28. The Republican National Committee has announced that 3,440,000 ' dollars will be spent on the campaign to elect Mr Harding. The Democratic National Committee announced the total expenditure of the Cox campaign will be 870,000 dollars. THE CAMPAIGN PROGRESS (Received This Day at 8.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct 29. Non-partisan observers are of opinion that the election will not foe an honest referendum on the League of Nations ,though it will he so misconstrued. The League has a powerful appeal of real strength, but Democratic campaigners failed to. realise this at the outset. They have now begun to appreciate it and have forced the issue forward with vigor during the past week, resulting in a reaction favouring Mr Cox, hut this is apparently too late. Harding’s party had money and organisation for a skilful, effective campaign, which Cox is lacking. Democrats accused Harding of a campaign of millions, but it is with envy they watchthe money flowing into the Republican exchequer. Mr Harding is also favoured by the reaction against the so-called Wilsonism. It is thought* Mr Cox’S heritage from Mr Wilson has been a burden rather than an aid.
