The Professional Heavy-weight Ph.nnpionship of New Zealand held here tonight, was won by Tom Keeney (Gisborne), who beat Albert Pooley (Auckland), on points. Pooley had the better of the opening rounds, Heeney being apparently nefrvous at the start. Heeney gained confidence at the eighth round and won the majority of the iemaining rounds by ft bare majority. Heeney is a younger brother of Jack iH coney, Middioweight Professional Champion of New Zealand. SCULLING CONTEST. BLENHEIM, Oct. 28. I W. Fogwell arriyed from Sydney last | night. He will race P. J. TRAINS HELT) UP. LEVIN 1 , October 28. All railway traffic is held up on the Palmerston —Wellington line by the state of the permanent way near Kokutaroa. There is no actual washout, but the flood waters caused a weakness in the formation, which is being investigated. The down train from Palmerston is a,t Shannon and the southward main trunk at Shannon. The New Plymouth up express is at Levin and the south slow train at Koputa|oa. PROGRESS LEAGUE PROTEST. STRATFORD, October 28. At a special meeting of the Taranaki Progress 'League this morning, iai rpsolutibn was passed expressing grave concern, and emphatically protesting against the proposed discontinuance of work on the west end of Stratford: Okahukura line. The League also asked for an assurance from the Prime Minister and Minister of Works that the retrograde step of discontinuing the work at Tahora will not he taken. A further resolution was passed ealing on Government to vote a sum adequate to complete the whole of the work a Mount Egmont quarries.

A WELCOME DROP. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. Tea dealers are making a further reduction of sixpence per pound in prices of all grades of tea. A dealer said the drop was purely a local matter and was the result of the exhaustion of stocks required by merchants at the higher rates existing some six months ago. The position in Ceylon had not changed ,although the rupee was steadily coming down. DROP IN HIDES. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. There was very little business at Auckland hide sales, most of the lots were passed in. Prices showed a further drop compared with last week’s rotes of about ljd per pound for heavy ox hides. The offering for other classes of hides from id to Id per pound lower. Kip and yearling skins were practically unchanged. Extra prime light calf skins sold up to 23d per lb. SOUTH BRITISH COY. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. At a meeting of the South British Company shareholders, the articles of the Association were amended to divide the existing sthares of five pounds into shares of one pound each. The proposal to increase the directors’ remuneration from £2,900 to £4,000 among seven directors ,was defeated by the meeting. The Chairman demanded a poll, which is proceeding.
