The Auckland City Council having exhausted every means in New Zealand to float an electricity loan of £50,000 at 5i per cent without success, has resolved to ask Mr Massey, on his visit /to Auckland next month, to receive a deputation asking authority from Parliament to give local bodies power to pay a higher rate on their debentures than 5f per cent. REOPENING OF CLA'BBY CASE. HASTINGS, October 23. The Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association has received a letter saying that the New Zealand Boxing Council has decided to reopen the Clabby case at a meeting to be held on a date selected iby the President.
KIRKWOOD BE 1 ATS IDES. DUNEDIN, October 23. Kirkwood beat lies (Christchurch) by 4 up and 2 to play on the St. Clair golf links to-day. BRITISH RED CROSS. WELLINGTON, Oct. 28. A meeting was held last night under the auspices of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross and Order of St John. The Governor-General, who was accompanied by Lady Jellicoe, presided. Addresses were delivered by Lord Jellicoe, Hon Parr (Minister of Public Health), and Dr Collins, who moved:—That the widespread and popu lar membership of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross and Order of St. John is necessary for the success in its peace time work. General Richardson seconded the motion, which was carried.
Sir Heaton Rhodes then moved:— That it be a recommendation to the four centres that the te.rms of the agreement made between the Order of St John and British' Red Cross Society on September 4th 1919, should be approved and adopted for the present. This was carried unanimously. A further resolution moved by Dr Truby King:—That the New Zealand branch should organise an auxiliary society of junior members ires seconded by Mr Duke M.P., and it found unanimous favour with the audience. TRAP FATALITY. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. Charles Andrews, aged 69, was injured at Silverdale thrush a horse bolting and overturning the vehicle. He died on the way to Auckland Hospital. q
GODLEY HEAD FOG SIGNAL. WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. Sir Win. Herries states that the Godley Head fog signal is at present in use, but could not be operated on ono occasion recently owing to the resicuiation of the attendant and the inability to get another m time. rangements are now being made to appoint a successor, and it is hoped■ th«j it will be possible to use the fog signal when required in future. WA IUTA DISPUTE SETTLED RFJEpTON, October . 2/. The Waiuta water feed drills dispute is settled. The men receive compensation! of full time Host and drills are to be installed before the end of the year. The men consider they are well'treated. The mine resumed this morning.
SUP on railway line. WANGANUI, October 27 ' A bad slip occurred on the railway line a couple of miles from Wanganui side of Fordell and no trains have arrived from or left for the south today. There is no possibility of transhipping .passengers. The New Plymouth express will bo held up for least a couple of hours. Slips are reported im various parts of the back country. IN THE AIR, HASTINGS, October 27. The Walsh avroplane left at 10.45 for a flight to Masterton carrying a pilot and mechanic. The weather has now cleared.
ARBITRATION COURT. • CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 27. A matter of great interest to the printing trade throughout the Dominion was raised at to-day’s sitting of tile Arbitration Court. Renn on behalf of New Zealand related printing trades association, asked if the questions submitted in connection with the new award had been decided. Renn explained that employers and employees were awaiting the decision with considerable interest. Employers declined t opay the rates of wages authorised bv the new award until the court decision was known, and thousands of pounds were involved as back wage. Justice Stringer said the court had arrived at a decision that day and replies to the questions would be forwarded that day to those concerned.
