The police have been making investigations, which culminated on Friday ih the arrest of J. G. Murray and C. A. Travis, railway guards, on charges of alleged theft. Previous to the arrests being made the houses of both men were searched, and in each case an express load of allegedly stolen goods was removed to the polipe station. Detective Gibson, who was associated with the police in their operations, stated that goods were missing not only from the yards and goods shed, but also from travellers’ hampers. The arrests have caused a sensation in Ashburton, where both men are well known. The goods taken in the search included quantities of groceries and clothing.

Nominations for the County Council, Charitable Aid Board, Westland Power Board, and Harbor Board, close on Monday next, the Ist inst. The hour of noon is the .closing hour for nominations. At about 11.45 a.m. on Sunday says the “Argus,” a drowning accident occurred in the Grey river. Mr Percy Walton, who was whitebaiting near the old engine shed, on the Blaketown side of tiie river, fell into the water and was drowned. There was no one at hand when the accident occurred, but a Chinaman, and he immediately called for help, but when help came there was no sign of the young man. On viewing the scene of the accident, it is apparent that Mr Walton must have slipped off the rock he was standing on and struck his head on the rocks, rendering -him partially unconscious and preventing him from assisting himself. Mr .Walton was a son of Mrs Walton of Chapel St., Greymouth. He was about 27 years of age, and an employee of Messrs C. Smith, Ltd., Drapers.

The Hokitika Bowling Club opened the season yesterday afternoon. In spite of the heavy rain on Sunday night and early yesterday morning, the green, rolled out in capital order, if on the heavy side. The formal opening took place at 2.30 o’clock, the President (Mr 11. S. 'Galbraith) in a few well chosen words expressing good wishes for the coming season and appreciation of the excellent efforts of the Ground Committee and assistants. Mrs Galbraitlr then rolled up the first ball amid applause and the season was declared open. At the tea interval after a dainty repast had been partaken of, kindly arranged by Mesdames Galbraith and Stewart, the President expressed his pleasure in welcoming the visitors present, quite a large number of ladles gracing the green with their attendance, read a telegram of good wishes from the Reefton Bowling Club and then presented the Duncan Cup to the winner of the Singles Championship for last season (Mr A. E. Benjamin) to hold for the year, congratulating him on his success. Mr Benjamin briefly acknowledged the good wishes. Hearty cheers were then given for the winner. Play was then continued, the game for the afternoon being the annual match President v. Vice President, the game ending in a substantial win for the President’s side, The scores were as follows: —Presidents —Bishop, Stuart, Stevenson and Galbraith (skip) 22 beat Vice President—Fedderson, Hansford, Berry and Stewart (skip) 13. Presidents—Wells, Macfarlane, A. King, J. Wilson (s) 26, beat Vice Presidents— Stevenson, Bruce and Benjamin (s) 13. Totals: President 48, Vice President 26. The attendance was not as large as was expected, a number ( of players not expecting the green to be playable, but those present had a very enjoyable afternoon, which turned out warm and pleasant.
