Constable Woolfendale deposed he and Detective McHugh searched the district for twenty miles from Eyres farm. They , examined 1303 horses, including 418 j shod. None of tlie shoes were like I those on Mickey, which were handmade. ' THEFT OF BENZINE. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 20. • At the police court, George Birch, driver of a baker’s motor van was fined £5 on each of two charges of theft of benzine. Accused had stored the van and motor car in a local garage for the last six months. Quantities of benzine were missed yesterday and accused uas seen taking benzine from the tanks of cars in the garage. The police laid a trap and early this morning the accused was caught in the act of pumping benzine from two cars. R.S.A. ENQUIRY. DUNEDIN, -et. 20. The committee of the local R.S.A. held an enquiry into the statements recently made regarding soldier mental patients. The member who made the allegations cited three cases, which he contended were wrongfully committed. He called as witnesses the relative of one patient, and one who had been a patient, also a lady visitor to the institution. It was alleged that one soldier with a wound in the back had not received proper medical attention. The inquiry was adjourned till this evening to enable an inquiry to be made at the Magistrate’s Court office. COUNTY ENGINEER. I WAIMATE, Oct. 20. The Waimate County Council to-day appointed S. R. Wright, engineer and clerk of the Selwyn County, to be engineer of the Waimate Council. There were 21 applicants. STEAMERS FOR UNION [ COMPANY. I DUNEDIN, Oct. 20. The Union Steamship Coy. have purchased a number of cargo steamers as! part of their extensive programme of after the war reconstruction. The steamers are:—Cape Colony, formerly War Palace, of 3112 tons; Cape Natal, | formerly Warefoam, 3096 tons; Stol-j berg, 5886 tons; Cleopatra, 2200 tons; j Irmgara, 5900 tons; and the John Heidmann, 3455 tons. These boats are to be renamed respectively:—Kaitoke, Kaikorai, Waitotapu, Koranui, Waikouaiti, and Kaimanawa,
