WEDNESDAY, OCT. 20. (Before T. E. Maunsell, Esq., Warden.) LICENSING ACT. V Tlie police charged four offenders with being on licensed premises, (Masonic Hotel) during prohibited hours who did not appear. Sergt McCarthy gave evidence of the men being on the premises at 11.15 p.m. All were convicted. Three being first offenders wore fined 20s and costs 7s and the other who was fined ait last sitting, was fined £2 and costs 7s. An offender charged with being on licensed premises (Pioneer-Hotel), during prohibited hours on the 15th. Oct. did not appear. Constable Quinn gave evidence. A conviction was recorded and a fine of 20s and costs 7s inflicted. The police charged a young man with being on licensed premises (Red Lion Hotel) after hours. Mr Wells for defendant pleaded not guilty, claiming he was an employee, who was employed in looking after the gas engine, used for generating power for the picture show. After hearing evidence the Magistrate held that defendant was not a servant employed on the premises of the hotel. A conviction was recorded and a fine of 20s and costs 7s inflicted. ASSAULT. The police charged Francis McLaughIn with assault by striking Albert Cooper in the face at Rimu. A' plea of guilty was entered. A further charge of indecent language was withdrawn by the police. Sergt- McCarthy stated the trouble arose during .a dance at Rimu and about 2.30 a.m., the defendant struck Cooper on the side of the face, but without inflicting ainjy serious injury. His Worship convicted defendant and fined him 40s and costs 7s, half the fine to be paid to Cooper. DEBT CASES. Andrews Bros (Mr Murdoch) v. P. Dinan (Grey). Mr Murdoch stated the actual amount had been paid by wire. He asked for costs involved. Costs 19s were allowed.
