If a Wave of Depbession Comes. Should unemployment become general in England, and thousands of men are looking for work, the influence of the unions will fall to zero. In prosperous times, when Labour is in demand, the workers may collectively and individually obtain almost any wage they demand, and prescribe their own conditions as to hours and output, hut this ■will alter if there is competition for em ployment, and the unions would be powerless. They could no longer threaten the employers, and they would become a negative influence un+il labour adjusted itself to the change. 'No one wants to see this state of things, but the British workmen are doing their utmost to bring such a condition about-.
