COUNCIL OF CHURCHES. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 18. At a meeting of the Council of Churches to-night the following motion was carried:— “That in view of the serious social ' and economic evils inflicted on the community by the number of totalisator’ permits already in existence, this Council of Churches views with alarm the fact that by a majority of more than two to one Parliament voted for the second reading of the Bill to increase the number by 38; (2) that this Council further tenders its hearty thanks to those members of Parliament, led by Messrs Isitt and McCombs, who opposed the Bill with such pluck and determination as to necessitate its \v itlidrawal at the committee stage; (3) that as the Prime Minister, in substitution for the Bill, has proposed to set up a Royal Commission to deal with the question of the number and distribution of racing permits, this Council further urges that any suggested increase by such Commission should be stoutly re- . j sisted, as being a scandalous reflection on the need ,emphasised by the Prime
