Thoughts For The Times.
The Financial Outlook. The latest banking returns as a whole indicate the enormous pressure that exists for credits, and under this pressure rates must advance. There are other elements which must bo taken into consideration. There is the fact that the Government expenditure is on a lavish scale, and that presently there will be an extraordinary expenditure j under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settle-: inept Act which should have the effect of continuing if not emphasising the inflation. Hi ere is also the fact that wool and meat will meet with an unfavourable market and therefore the incomes of the producers will suffer in consequence. Then, again, there is the general slackening of trade, or rather of increase in unemployment, which is tending to reduce the prices of commodities, and tempt us into importing more and more. What is to be the outcome of all these conflicting elements, and wliat will be the effect on New Zealand? The position is full of uncertainty, and no one can safely predict what is likely to happen. It is time for prudence and caution, but not for pessimism or timidity.—Mercantile (IjfzejitP,
