For shine, time past /bakers’ operatives throntfnoiit the Dominion have been urging that a system of daylight baking should be instituted, but the Arbitration Court has laid it down that it has no power to make any alterations in the present practice, and has stated that only by legislation can a change be effected. With a view of drafting legislative proposals on the matter, a represntative conference of the various bakers’ unions of the Dominion was held in Wellington on Wednesday. It is thought that the time is now opportune to introduce such a reform and the conference will also consider suggestions that statutory provisions should be made restricting the sale of bread which is less than twelve hours old. In view of a possible shortage in the production of wheat, it is felt that such a restriction would have an important effect in reducing the consumption of bread.

Signor Giovgetti, of Venice, who was among the guests at the opening of the Wellington Bowling Club on Saturday states that the game of bowls is extremely popular in Italy, and by some authorities is thought to have originated in that country. It is not the same game, however, as played here. It is played with a jack and round bowls (made of hard olive wood), on the hard ungrassed earth. The bowls have no bias. It is a matteir of nicety in strength only in getting near the jack. No allowance has to be made for “green” because of the absence of bias in the bowl. One of the permissible liberties of th e game is that a player instead of “driving” (which is permitted) can toss a bowl into the air, with the hope that on alighting it will scatter the enemy wood.
