CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD

The Board met at Christchurch on Friday last. Present—Messrs E. H. ■ Andrews (chairman), E. W- Armitage, 1 \Y. A. Banks, H. J. Bignell, J. G. Goav, I 'J'. Hughes, .John .Jamieson, J. Maze, A. Peverill, W. P. Spencer, C. S. Thompson, and the Hon J. Grimmoml. Mr Peverill moved:—“That the Education Department be urged to Hold annual examinations in technical subjects, to be conducted'by its duly qualified technical inspectors; and that suchexaminations be substituted for those held under the auspices of the City and Guilds of London Institute.” Discussion of the motion AA-as deferred until the next meting of the Board. The Buildings Committee reported that it had been resolved to apply for a grant for rebuilding the school at Aavutuna. The Agricultural and Manual and Technical Committee reported that the result of the potato-groAving competition carried on in Smith Canterbury during the past season Avas: —Class (a), sole charge schools: Southburn, 1; Rangitata Station, 2; Opihi, 3; Springbrook 4. Class (b): Cave, 1; Makikihi, 2; Hook, 3. The Committep recommended that the folloAving resolution should be for warded to the Department:—“That the Canterbury Education Board respectfully suggests to the Minister of Education, when filling the vacancy for the position of chief inspector in the secondary department, that other qualifications being fairly equal, preference he given to the cancPdate possessing some expert knowledge in agricultural and technical education.” As the Minister | had stated that it was the intention of the Department to amend the present regulations dealing Avith the election and appointment of managers of technical schools, the committee recommended that the folloAving resolution should be forwarded to the Department:—“That blie amount of representation allowed, by the present- regulations seems reasonable' but the basis of such representation should bo changed to insure local Interest.” The report Avas adopted. The financial statement was received and adopted. A sub-committee Avas appointed to visit Wellington to bring under the notice of the Minister the inadequacy of the buildings maintenance grant. The followng district commissioners Ayere appointed:—lnchbonnie, Mr P. Ryder; Kuinara, Messrs Bell- and Burrell. Reference Avas made to the deaths of Mr Gerald Morris, headmaster of Little River School, and Mr A. A. Adams, avlio retired some time ago after being for 33 years headmaster of Greymouth School. Several members of the Board highly praised the Avork of the deceased teachers, and it lA’as resolved to send letters of sympathy to the relatives. Appointments recommended included Miss A. E. Kelly, mistress at Mikonui. The Hokitika Committee wrote recommending increase to coach proprietors to Is (id per trip. It Avas resolved to pay in the meantime, pending consideration by Department. Mr T. Nolan (South Westland) asked Avhether lie could purchase the reserve he is occupying (10 acres). It Avas resolved to call for tenders. MR. RIDLEY’S REPORT. I haA'e continued programme of:— Mondays—Greymouth D.H. School. Tuesdays.—Hokitika and Primary Classes. Saturday.—Teachers’ Classes, Greymouth. I have also visited the folloAving Primary Schools: —Camerons, Paroa, Hatters, Ngahere, Hokitika, Kokatahi LoAver and Upper, Koiterangi, Stafford, Goldsborough, Callaghans, Kumara and Arahura Road. Appending regulation individual reports. The season has been very favourable to date and most schools show good promise. Tree Planting.—Practically none effected to date. Potatoes. —A minimum of Tibs in 5 roAvs planted in all schools. Notes. —Observation and Ideas (outside) encouraging and discouraging almost alternately. The following matters have been subject of reports to supervisor:— Dairy Science Schorff.—Settlers, Factory Managers, Teachers, Inspector, Chief Instructor, and Supervisor giving every assistance. Care needed not to be .too ambitious. Potato Competition and Seed Supplies and Lime submitted to Canterbury Education Board.
