Jeffries, Justices, the police charged John Kelly, a comparative stranger to this district, pn (sth October, with theft of a Winchester repeating rifle, valued at £5, the property of John Manera of Ross. The accused pleaded guilty,'and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sergt McCarthy outlined the facts. He stated he was about 21 vears of age. He had been working in South Westland for a time and had made his way up from Mikonui on foot, and on -the way had gone into a hut at Totara lagoon and had taken the gijikand also some food. Enquiries being made, the accused was interviewed and acknowledged the theft, giving information where the rifle was, hidden in some gorse near the hut it was taken from. The Bench stated that the charge was a serious one and sentenced him to fourteen days’ hard labour in Greymouth gaol. An order was made for the return of the rifle to the owner.
