HOKITIKA BOWLING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. i The on uuni meeting of the Club took place in the pavilion last evening, Mr Jt. S. Galbraith (Vice-President) presiding over an attendance of 18 members. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and eonfirnied. : . ANNUAL report. I The Secretary (Mr J. N. Nalder) read the following report:— ' Your Committee submits hereunder its report on the affairs of the Club for the year ended the 30th September, 1920: 1 Finances—The Rank Overdraft as at the 30th September, 1920, amounted to £374 14s lOd, showing a reduction of os for the year’s operations. The members’ subscriptions received amounted to £54 12s, representing the subscriptions of 2(1 members, and additional amounts collected by way of nomination fees, etc., amounted to £5 13s, making. a total revenue for the year of £OO os. The Club’s handicap list for the season, which contains the names of all playing members bears 30 names. Several of j tile members appeared on the green on i few occasions. The expenditure for the | year amounted to £59 19s lid. The j caretaker’s salary amounted to £3l 10s | sd, while interest on the bank overdraft | absorbed £27 0s Od. The Committee [ desires that members should be reminded of the undertaking given to the bank to reduce the overdraft by £25 a year. This arrangement was made in the year * 1918, and to enable effect to lie given to it it was decided to invite members to j contribute 10s each to be applied in reducing the overdraft, a reduction of £95 ! for that year resulting. These contributions hatm not been continued and the ■ Club’s ordinary revenue has been suffi- | cient only, with the exercise of the | strictest economy in expenditure, to | meet the caretaker’s salary, interest on > bank overdraft, insurance, etc. The I committee urges that means be found I to carry out the undertaking with the I bank, and invites a discussion on the matter at this meeting. ' West Coast Tournament—lt is to be regretted that the Club was no represened at the Annual Tournament held at Westport last season, this being the first occasion on which any affiliated Club has failed in representation at the Annual Tournament. Local Championship—This competition, as usual, provided many keen contests, and resulted in a victory for Mr A'. E. Benjamin. The genial “Benjy” is to be congratulated on his win. His very much improved and consistent play broke down all opposition. The Green—The green, during the playing season, was not up to former condition, due mainly to the unevenness of the surface caused by the work done with the object of eradicating the growth of moss. This, however, has been overcome during the off season, and the gi;cen now gives promise of being keen and true for the forthcoming season. The Club’s thanks are due to those members who assisted in the le. veiling and top-dressing operations. During the off season the Club’s former caretaker left the district. It will therefore bo necessary to fill this position, and in this connection the Club may expect to be met with additional cost, as the arrangements made in past years have been exceedingly favorable to the Club. Visiting Bowlers—The Club was fortunate, in the season under review, in a visit from a party of bowlers —with their lady friends—from Timaru, also from a rink from Wellington. These visits led to two very enjoyable games and the very evident pleas ire of th* visitors. Special thanks are due to the ladies who undertook and so capably carried out the entertainment off the visitors. ■ Mention should again lie made to the pleasure of the games arranged with the Greymouth Club. Several keenly contested games were played, and although the honors for the season fell to the Greymouth friends, the play was much enjoyed, and the feelings of the playeis most cordial. The Club’s thanks arc due to its officers for the satisfactory conduct of the local competitions, etc., and to the ladies for the happy way in which they provided and dispensed refreshments on numerous occasions during the season. The neat trophies presented, to the Club by Mr W. A. Berry provided the incentive for a very successful pairs tournament to decide the first holdeis, and several challenge matches following. Mr Berry is entitled to the Club’s best thanks. —Rceeivcd. A lengthy discussion took place over the financial position. - It was resolved to increase the subscription, but with a view not to take unfair advantage of now members who had notified their intention of joining it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Highson and Bruce that the subscription of old members be £2 12s 6d., and for joining or rejoining new members for thiis season only, £2 2s. 'Tins was agreed to after leave had been given to amend rule 17. In connection with th e appointment of a caretaker the matter was referred to Mr Hickson and the 'Secretary with power to act. i The matter of lady members joining
was referred to, and it was resolved that enquiries be made into the matter, j with a view tq bringing into effect fhe | proposal made two years ago, which fell J through owing to the influenza visitation. T|jp motjon for the .adoption of the J report and balance slipet was then agreed to. I CORRESPONDENCE. i A quantity of correspondence was dealt with, tjjp oh).Y important letters being tliqsp from Hip Executive of the yfjetst Coast Bowling Association I Tjieso referred to the proposal by Reef- . ton Club not to take up the tonnm- . ment fixture this season, and that it | had been suggested that, Hokitika | should arrange to hold the tournament, 1 This bad been tentatively approved, but a further letter from the Executive ’ stated that owing to the. local Club, not being represented at tlje meeting of" the eeptre, and owipg to tj)p Club being in arrears of £1 Is it bad been decided to ask the Grey Club to take this year’s tournament. 1
The reception of the letter caused considerable discussion. It „was stated that the letter advising- the meeting of the Centre, had arrived while the Sec- , rotary was on leave, and being addressed personally had not received attention j till liis return, after the meeting while . the fact of the smalj fee outstanding bad been overlooked, and no request for payment had been made. The meeting resolved to write explaining the circumstances; to express ivegret at the tone of the notification, and accepting the decision of the Centre for the next tournament to be* held in Greymouth. During the discussion a member remarked that the Centre should not be the on,e to talk of promptness, for as a matter of fact;’ they were very dilatory them.sejvcs, instancing that the winners of the pairs competition at the tournament held in Greymouth the season before last had not yet received.,the certificates as winners of that competition though application had been made a year ago for them. j ELECTION.OF OFFICERS. j The following officers were elected: President—Mr R,.
