The value of the Otira motor mail service in connection with through traffic from Christchurch to Hokitika was exemplified specially yesterday, j The slip on the Christchurch-Arthur’s Pass line delayed the traffic some hours, and the authorities reported the Mine would not be clear till to-day. However the service got through to Arthur’s Pass late yesterday afternoon and the coaches connected. Mr R. Clements in charge of the motor mail service >vas at Otira, and learning of this arranged that the Hokitika passengers and mails should be brought from Arthur’s Pass to Otira by the first coach. The coach proprietors kindly made this possible, and the first coach reaching Otira about seven, Mr Clements left at once, and was in Hokitika about 9.30. This was a very creditable performance, and passengers and public like were pleased with the value of the service. Unfortunately the postal authorities did not expect the mails so early ,and consequently there was no staff available to sort the mails till this morning.
