CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER sth. 'Thg monthly meeting of the above was held at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock. Present:—Messrs G. A. Perry (Chairman), W. J. Butler, 11. Wild, C. J. Nightingale, R. F. Perliam T. W„ Duff, T. W. Bruce, M. H. Houston, J. J. Mclntosh, D. J. Evans, and Dr. Teichelmann. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Empire Congress, Toronto, forwarding official programme of the ninth congress of tb 0 Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire.—Received with thanks. From Associated Chambers of Commerce, Wellington, forwarding precis of representations regarding amendments desired to the land and income tax bill before Parliament.—Received with thanks, and various points discussed. As the matters bad been represented to the Government for decision it was resolved at this stage not_to take further action. From A. J. Harrop, Christchurch, conveying thanks for donation towards : cost of typing the history of Westland he was compiling, and outlining his scheme. Mr Harrop mentioned in bis letter that the history brought down to 1876 would be ready for typing in 1922 while the second period would be brought down to the date of the opening of the Otira tunnel—a sufficiently important land' mark for the purpose. —Received; The opinion was expressed that the compiler was going into his self-imposed' task with genuine thoroughness. From Commissioner of Crown Lands approving the mounting of the war trophies at the Government Buildings.— Received. From Westland Branch of the Progress League thanking the Chamber for financial grant made.—Received. From Ross Borough Council making a contribution of £3 towards the cost of the Otira- motor mail service.—Received with thanks. From James Leitch, Greymouth, regarding coal supplies for Hokitika and district.—Received and further steps to be taken regarding additional regular supplies for the town. From Canterbury Progress League asking support to the proposal to have a School of Forestry established r J Canterbury 'University ColVege.—Received and resolved to heartily support. The Chairman pointed out tb chair should be established as near the West Coast as possible, the climatic conditions of which were the most favourable for forestry growth in the Dominion. From Same asking support to the request to Government to undertake the Hiley scheme jfor the improvement of the Lyttelton to Christchurch railway service which included the duplication and electrification of the Lyttelton tunnel and lino.—Received to b * supported as desired, and Government- to be communicated with. GENERAL. It was reported that the aivnual meeting of the Chamber would tab" place on the 2nd. November, and it was resolved to circularise members regarding outstanding subscriptions, and to invite additional membership. The improvements suggested some time ago for Cass Square were mentioned, it being stated some private contributions were in hand. It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to undertake the work if convenient before the summer advanced so that the grounds would be more attractive to visiting picnic parties in the season. The question of assisting in a local matter leading up to research work was discussed and the members agreed to assist privately.
An informal discussion took place regarding industrial unrest, but the general opinion expressed was to leave matters to public opinion which appeared to be taking general shape, wliffi in any case the Government was assured that the majority of the people were behind them in all constitutional measures neceseasary to Ire taken. The meeting adjourned at 9 p.m.
