LEGISLATORS’ SALARIES

(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) 1 WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. Amendments proposed by the Government in the Civil List Bill dealing with salaries of members of the Legislature were introduced in the House. The Amendment provided that the increased scale of salaries should operate as from March 31st last. Government’s original proposal was |that payments should date from June 30th and many members had urged that they should go back to the date of the general election. ' • , Other Amendments added another £SO to the salaries of each of the Chairmen of Committees, making the salary £SOO in the case of the Council’s Chairman and £750 in the case of the House’s Chairman. The salary of tie Native Member of the Executive was increased originally from £BOO to £IOOO and was now increased to £llOO. The salvu-v proposed for the Prime Minister remained at £2,000 and for each Minister at £I3OO. . When the amendments were introduced Mr Luke (Wellington North), uroed that the Prime Minister’s salary should be £2,500 and several members supported. Mr Massey stated he vas not working for the salary.
