PROPORTION EXPORTED

WELLINGTON, September 30

A comprehensive return showing the output of sawn timber for the Dominion for the year ending March 31st. 1920, and a comparative statement showing the amount exported and retained for the home market for the years 1917-18 , and 1919-20 was read to the House by the President of the Board of Trade (the Hon. E. P. Lee). The output for til© year ended March 1020, in superficial feet, totalled 296,165,080 feet. The quantity was made up as follows: Superficial feet. White pine 82,419,821 Rinat 145,584,203 Kauri 22,598^391 Matai 17,820,597 Totara 14,414,298 Beech 9,050; 344 Hinau 4,247 Taraire 174,650 Tanekalia 54,328 Pukatea 200,000 Pinas Insignis 3,064,200 Bluegum 80,000 Kawhaka 50,000 Silver pine 50,000 Of the quantities detailed above, A 463,000 superficial feet were exported, and 189,954,489 placed on the New Zealand market, the percentage exported, being 5.3 per cent. There were 10,101,000 feet of rimu, 362,000 feet ofkauri, and no matai or totara exported. The percentage of rimu to the total output exported was 7, and of kauri 1.0. For the year 1917-18 the total output was 158,470, 680 feet, made up of 111,318,579 feet of rimu, 21,83-5,023 feet of kauri, 11,930,040 feet of matai, and 13,387,038 feet of totara. Of this total 38,589,030 feet were exported, or 22.9 per cent of the output, leaving the. balance of 134,320,617 feet to l>e placed on the Dominion market. The individual quantities exported were 27,583,235 feet- of rimu, 10,454,494 feet of kauri, 11,930,040 feet of matai, and 57,337 feet of totara. The percentages of increase in the quantities placed on the New Zealand market in 1919-20 compared with 1917-18, were:—Rimu 52.5 per cent., kauri 13.7 per cent., matai 44.0 per cent., totara 6.6 per. cent. Tlie discrepancy between the total output in 1917-18 and the quantities exported and placed on the New Zealand market during that period is accounted for by stocks held at the beginning of the period.
