At 11 o’clock last night, a fire was discovered in a block of t wooden buildings in Hardy Street used as a .shop on the’ ground floor and upstaira occupied by F. Price and family who had a. narrow escape. The fire was soon got under, little damage being done. AN AIR FLIGHT. WANGANUI, Oct 5. The first aeroplane flight from Wellington to Wanganui was made, successfully to-day. Capt. Russell, who left Petone at 10.7 this morning arrived at Wanganui at 11.27, the trip taking, an hour and twenty minutes. The weather was perfect for the trip and the landing pt Westmero perfect. Great interest was taken in the flight over the town, a big crowd watching.
LEAGUE OF LOYAL CITIZENS HAWERA, October 5,
A large representative meeting was held at Hawera yesterday, when it was unanimously decided to form an organisation to uphold law and. order, and supremacy, paramount., A strong executive was formed to tarry out the organisation at once. It was decided that the name of the organisation be League of Loyal Citizens.” A resolution was unanimously carried that the Prime 'Minister’s attention be called to tlie seditious sentiments expressed by Mr Arbuclde at Wellington on September 29th. in which he made the following statement — “That on the Alliance of Labour rested the salvation of the workers of New Zealand; they had to organise as the workers of Russia and Italy had or-
industrialists must take change of industries,” and this meeting urge that all such statements be made seditious matters and thosp guilty of making them be punishable by law, and that if there is no law to provide for such cases, that' such law should be placed upon statute book without delay.
APPEAL COURT.
OTIRA GORGE ACCIDENT CASE
WELLINGTON, Oct. 5,
The Appeal Court was engaged today hearing the case of King, versus A. Hall Limited; Hugh Cassidy and A. Hall, a case removed to the Appeal Court. Plaintiff’s action is far damages sustained in a coach accident on June 17th 1919 and he alleges the accident was caused, by negligent driving and insufficiency of brakes on a coach. The evidence was taken at Hokitika before Justice Herdman and the jury awarded plaintiff £2,000 damages. The case is proceeding.
A RESERVED DECISION. AUCKLAND, Oct. 5
Mr Poynton, S.M., gave his reserved judgment in a claim for ten guineas damgae against three .master plumbers in favour of a journeyman who left employment where he was earning 2s Id an hour, and got another job at 2s 3d. As a result of a meeting of Master Plumbers Association, the deputation interviewed tlie plaintiff’s new employer, with the result that plaintiff was not allowed to start work. Had a deputation of trade unionists induced a worker to break an engagement and tlie worker did so, the Union would be liable under the common law and defendants ■in this case were liable. Judgment for the amount claimed.
