STEAD’S

The hundred pages of the new number of Stead’s, September 18th. (9d.) are crowded with useful information on all sorts of subjects. A feature is a •‘Talk on Prohibition,” in which the question of No-License in Victoria is discussed. The writer points out exaggerations on both sides, but shows that, at any rate the carrying of No-License in Victoria would not seriously intercjv with the revenue or throw many people out of work. “Sir Hamar Greenwood, the Chief' Secretary foi Ireland,” is a subject of a brief sketch by Mr Stead. Sir Hamar at one" time worked in Mr Stead’s office in London. His career is described as being “the most romantic of any man at present in English politics.” A sketch of Hob ert Smillie is exceedingly topical, in view of the fact that it rests with this dour Scotch miner whether England is plunged into a tremendous industrial struggle or not. Other special articles deal with the question as to whether white people can populate Northern Australia, and Self-determination of Turkey—a criticism of the Turkish Treaty. “Twopence a Day” is the title of a contribution by John. A. Brailsford, on the Australian flag. Amongst the reviews of current books is an excedingly interesting summary of G. D. H. Cole’s “Guild Socialism and the State.” In the “Catechism of Current Events” must information is given on many subjects, and paragraphs m “News from Everywhere” tell of happenings all over the world which have not been published in the papers., «’ In the “Progress of the World, , Mi Stead deals with the Polish situation, the new Baltic Republics, and current events generally.
