LEASEHOLD QUESTION

(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1.

The Te Aroha Crown Leases Bill was the first order of the day to-day, and the Civil List Bill proposing increases in members! salaries came next. The Prime Minister in thus arranging the order paper, ma.y have had his eye to the fact that the leasehold members had been obstructing the Te Aroha Bill. The prospect of a chance to raise their own wages did not deter leasehold mem hers from rising the leasehold versus freehold issue again, and the debate went for about three hours. It- wandered very far afield. Mr Lysnar, (Gisborne) told the House that tho right way to settle virgin bush land was to let wealthy men take up large? blocks of freehold and spend further money on development. Mr Holland (Buller) had something to say about evictions by the Duke of Sutherland, and other members wandered just as far away from the subject. Eventually the Bill was read a second time by'39 votes to 15, " put through committee and passed.
