The next ordinary meeting of the County Council will he held on Wednesday, the 13th inst.
It is notified that the annual meeting of No 2 Westland Industrial Building Society which was called for this evening has been postponed until Monday evening next, October 4th,, at 7.30 p.m.
A final reminder is given to County ratepayers that the electoral rolls for the November elections close at 5 o’clock on Wednesday next, and will be handed immediately to the printers for the preparation of the rolls.

A privato cable received yesterday afternoon brought the pleasing news that Private Chas Parham was embarking for New Zealand at Southampton on Thursday. His boat—probably the lonic—will he due in the Dominion about the middle of next month. He will have a hearty welcome home from his relatives and friends.
The grader of the Westland County Council was recently loaned to a settler at Coal Creek, Greymouth, for the purpose of levelling a paddock. At the request of the Borough Engineer of Greymouth, the grader will be used for demonstration purposes in the streets of Greymouth, Mr A. Dale going up on Monday for the purpose of taking charge of the machine.
A meeting of all interested in promoting cricket as a field sport during the Season now commencing, will be held at the Supreme Hall this evening at 8.30 o’clock. Cricket will be in great vogue this year. The visit of the English team to Australia—and perhaps to New Zealand—will revive interest in the doings of the Knights of the willow all over these southern seas. The interest will reflect itself in all quarters, and Hokitika is not likely to be any exception. Country elubs will be revived in the district no doubt, and" there will he facilities for inter-club games. An effort should be made, also, to encourage juvenile, cricket, for after all tlie game is such splendid training for the young. The basket social and dance in the Public Hall, Kokatahi, last evening, drew a very large attendance and proved a very distinct success. The Hospital building fund will benefit to a considerable amount aB a result.

The planet Mercury set on October Ist at 7.27 p.m., and sets on October loth at 8.21 p.m.; Venus sets on those dates at 8.6 p.m., and at 8.43 p.m. respectively. Te planet Mars is an interesting sight high in the western sky, forming a pendant to the constellation Scorpii, which hangs like a gigantic note of interrogation "m the heavens. The planet is slowly making its way through the constellation; during the month of September it passed close to Delta Scorpii, and to Alpha Scorpii (Antares). On October 6th it will be. very near Theta Opliiuohi, and on the 26th it will be close to Lambda Sagittarii.
The Denniston miners, who have been idle for tho past four days as a Consequence of the non-patyment of the Broken Hill levy by several members of the union, returned to work yesterday, Messrs B. Davidson, (Millerton), and J. Mcßride (Ngakawau) delegates of their respective unions preceded to Denniston some time ago, and as a result of the conference held there a satisfactory a'greemnt- was come to, all members having decided to pay the levy.
