WELLINGTON September 23

Visiting members of the Dominion Bowling Association were taken for a motor drive round the. Bays this morning, but as the weather was far from bright the jaunt was not so enjoyable as it might have been. In the afternoon the committee appointed to select a team to tour England met and picked a team with a few emergencies in ease of any withdrawals. The names selected will not be announced until the team is finally drafted, and guarantees have been secured.

REPATRIATION COST.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 23

In reply to a deputation of South African veterans asking for a share in repatriation, settlement, and pensions, benefits to-day, the Prime Minister admitted that the veterans are not as well treated as returned soldiers. Ho did not see how he could provide for South African men until he had disposed of the others. They had a claim on the country. The Minister of Lands (Hon J. D. Gutlire), said that returned soldiers came first, £22,000,000 had already been spent. A scheme had been discussed by Mr Massey for the settlement of iSTeterans and Imperial soldiers, who came second and third after the returned men. The pension claims were moderate and could he granted by the Government.

MINISTERIAL VISIT. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 23. Hon G. F. Anderson, Minister of Internal Affairs visited Invercargill today, and was interviewed by deputations on various subjects. The Southland League urged that the Tutanekai bo placed on the Stewart Island to Milford Sound service, as suggested recently. In the course of a statement the Minister said that he had under contemplation the issue of a new publication on tourist attractions, and industrial development and the possibilities of the Dominion, and the appointment of a qualified person o compile the work would probably be made shortly.

FIREMEN REFUSED TEA. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 23. The Moana was ready to sail from Lyttelton for Wellington at 8.30 p.m., but the firemen refused to go to sea, unless the chief cook was dismissed. If appears that some of the firemen went on board the vessel after 6 p.m. and expected to get their tea. The chief cook, however, refused to allow them to bo served, as the tea. hour was five o’clock. The firemen finally agreed to sail on condition that tlio cook lett the ship at Wellington to-morrdw, and the cook was accordingly given 24 hours’ notice. The Moana sailed at II p.m. WOMAN’S DEATH.
