A PROTEST.

FEATHERSTON COUNCIL RESIGNS CARTERTON, Sept. 23.

The Afaygr (Mr'jf. W. Smith) apf] seyefi Councillf>r§ of Featherston Jjpypugli Council, resignpd in a body yesterday evening as an answer to the bye=e]eetion whereby a member pf the Council who was suspended for alleged insulting conduct, and who had resigned without withdrawing the remarks objected to, was returned again. The sitting Council considered such action on the part of the electors, was a vote of no-confidence in them, and therefore resigned, and decline to seek re-elec-tion. A difficulty is anticipated in obtaining a new Council.

When the steamer Waiteirieita was near Great .Barrier yesterday, a wireless operator heard quite distinctly voices transmitted from the high power radiophone station at Avalon, 150 miles from San Francisco, a distance of 5,630 miles.

AN INCENDIARY FIRE, AUCKLAND, September 23 A fire af Senior's foundry, Freeman’s Jfay, owned by Clare and Warner, resulted in a door and doorstep boring burned, further damgo being averted by the fire brigade. Subsequently it was discovered the fire was evidently the work of an incendiary. The charred remains of a kerosene case were behind the door and two large belts were slashed with a sharp instrument. M WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. ■ At a brief interview to-day, the - Pyjme Minister informed the Municipal Association Executive that they need not fear taxation of revenue of munl“'eipnl trams, gas, eleotrieity, or water supply. Mr Massey refused a definite statement as to taxation of municipal debentures on the same basis as company stocks. The grievance can be expressed when the bill is before the House. He did not think municipalities -would have any grievance when the legislation was completed.
