AVENESDAY, SEPT. 22nd, 1920. (Before T. E, Maunsell, Esq., S.M.) The Police charged a local young man with procuring liquor while prohibited. Mr'Pilkington appeared .for defendant who was not present, and explained the circumstances' fully. Sergt. McCarthy stated that defendant had given him continuous trouble and the case was almost one for Pakatoa. He thought that stricter parential control would make the matter a deal easier. He would suggest that a fine would hardly meet the case. His Worship, besides ordering defendant to appear personally before him later in the day, convicted and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon, it to bo distinctly understood that any further breaches would mean, a committal to an inebriates institution. . Another resident charged with a similar offence, pleaded guilty, and was convicted and lined 20s, Court costs 7s. CIVIL BUSINESS. • Most of the cases called were struck out. Judgment by default was given in the following cases:— Hokitika Borough Council v. William Jones, claim £6 12s 4d, rates due, costs 19s, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d. Paterson, Michel and Coy. (Mr Sellers) v. Ilia in, Tainui and Waikura Tainui, claim £39 Its 3d. M,r Park appeared for Mrs |Tainui and asked for leave to defend/ He had only just received instructions and lmd not filed the required notice. Mr Sellers objected to leave being granted at this stage. The ease was adjourned to 6th October. Mr Sellers was allowed £1 10s costs. X’jTTfTTt Ajg I ywwfr
