The Hokitika Committee of the Canterbuitv Progress League was 'licit! at the County Chambers at 7.45 p.m. Present Messrs It. Wild '("Chairman), .Logue, Carley, Perliam, Ritchie, Stewart, Evans, Pilkingtou. • The minutes-,of the previous meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved.
The Chairman welcomed Messrs Loguo and Carley, representing the Sawmill Workers’ Ugioti, at the committee table.
INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Westland Chamber of Commerce notifying grant of £2o. Received. From Organiser Christchurch, acknowledging appointment of Mr C. M. Mhlfrov as the Westland representative on the League.—Received. From Westland County Council granting use of rooms for Committee meetings.—Received. From C. M. Mal Troy accepting appointment as representative on the League at Christchurch.—Received. GENERAL. The Secretary reported £SB receipts, i £2O payments . Messrs Wild, Evans and Pilkingtou were appointed a. sub-committee regarding’the enrolment of new members. ’ Mr Logue referred to the improvement necessary in the South Westland mail service. It was resolved to agitate for a permanent installation of a twice weekly mail service to Wailio Gorge. Mr Logue also expressed pleasure at the appointment of a nurse to South Westland. Mr Perhani referred to the introduction of an aerial service between the East and West Coasts, and suggested that a mail service was warranted. Such a service would develop into a commercial concern. Mr Logue stated Sea View hill was an ideal landing place. The matter was generally discussed round the table, and it was resolved to bring the question under the notice of the Government.
A report was given as to the satisfactory position regarding the main bridges on the South Westland road. Mr Logue said that the bridges were urgently required. Mr Ritchie moved that the Marine Department be urged to expend the parliamentary vote for the Bruce Bay Landing, the road to which was now completed. Mr Carley seconded. Carried.
A reference map of Westland showing location of district works required, for the use of the Canterbury Progress League was laid oa the table. Messrs Wild, Logue, Evans and Pilkington were appointed a sub-Com-mittee to watch the Public Works Estimates for the district, and in the event of any votes urgently required being omitted from the list, take steps to urge the inclusion of the works in the Supplementary Estimates. Mr Wild referred to the number of Government inspectors in various departments who were now perambulating the Dominion, their work or business often overlapping, and creating a class of officialdom which was placing heavy costs on the people. He moved that* a protest be made to the Government. Seconded by Mr Perliam and
carried. The meeting terminated at 9.‘-> o’clock.
