The annual meeting of the Kanieri Rifle Club takes place this evening at 8 o’clock at Kanieri. The Westland Acclimatisation Society will bold its ordinary rneetng on Monday evening next at 7.30 o’clock. The name of Miss Marjory Walker, a pianoforte solo, was omitted from tho programme of St. Paul’s Sunday School Concert. The dance arranged for this evening at the Supreme Hall will commence sharp at 8 o’clock. Good music has been arranged for and a capital dance should result.
The work of erecting the poles for the installation of the electric light in the town has been proceeding rapidly during the week, the workmen making a good show" with their operations. The Secretary to the Board of Trade has advised the Westland County Council in response to representations made, as follows:—“Arrangements made shipping cement. Alexander loads shipment for West Coast at Tarakohe on Thursday next.’
Heavy seas along the Coast, continue to keep .back the arrival of whitebait in any quantity. Last year on Sept. 6th. the local canning factory was at Work, but so far, there is no sign of a sufficient quantity to allow of operations being commenced.
Mr H .M. Fulton of Christchurch will make a display of the very latest fashions at Kellers’ Sample Rooms on Monday, and invites attendance and inspection of the splendid range that will be on view. It will be a great attraction, showing all the very latest designs.
An appeal has been made by the Women’s Benevolent Committee for left-off clothing and boots for children and adults. The fate of the Gaming Amendment Bill, introduced into Parliament by the member for Waipava, Mr. George Hunter, is rendered even more uncertain by reason of a disagreement inside the fold which the extra permits asked for would specially affect, says the - Auckland writer “Phaeton.” From the tenor of tho circular letter issued by the president of the Country Club’s Association, Mr Albert Byuce, it would seem that the executive of that body is quite opposed to the allotment as arranged.
Brief word was received in Greymouth last night of a. fatal accident at Kokiri, the victim or which was Mr Joseph Stubbs, a young man of about. 21 years of age, and a son of Mr Joseph Stubbs, of Preston Road. Greymouth. The few particulars available go to show that the cause of the fatality was a gun accident, and that it happened last evening. Deceased, who was employed at Baxter’s sawmill, was a popular young man, who by bis genial manner, 'gained the goodwill an-' esteem of all who knew him. Ehlisting at an early age, he had served in the war, with credit for a considerable term having been a member of the mounted forces in Egypt.
We regret to record the death this morning of an old and highly respected resident of Kanieri district, Mr Alex Hutchison, the well-known blacksmith passing away after a lengthy illness. The deceased, who was a native of New South Wales and 61 years of age,
had been a resident of Kanieri siiice the early ways. When lie first came to the Coast he ivprkpd at his trade with the late Mr George Davidson, thep joining the staff of Mr Tlios Burns at Kan-
ieri and later at Hokitika. Mr Hutchison took a great interest in local affairs in Kanieri, and especially in matters affecting Westland Hospital. For many years he was a member of the Trustees of Westland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, only retiring from office owing to ill health. He was unmarried, and leaves one sister, Mrs N.
