MrTj. \yMte, ip concluding bis report to the Industrial Association on Wednesday night on jhe vjsit of the Canterbury delegation to the West Coast, reached almost poetic heights of eloquence. “The West Coast appears to me,” said Mr White, “to have been bolstered up, and then badly let down, by political influences. To-day she ' s as a fish which, swims with fins of lead. But the day will come when the Otira tunnel will be worked to its fullest ca parity, in conjunction with a fleet of steamers handling its huge coal output; when the stampers will roar round Reefton as they roar from Johannesbung to FJandsfontein; when the saws will sing in those timber belts as they sing in the Canadian and Californian forests., Maybe over there some Rip van Winkle tourist will wake up and say, as the Indian said of the burial place of his fathers: “The sheep are on - the slopes around, the cattles m the meadows feed; the labourer ploughs the crumbling ground, and drops the yellow seed around. I like it not; I would the plain lay in its tall old groves again.Mr White will be remembered as “the poet of the party,!.' who was never lost for an apt phrase to express himself at any of the public gatherings.
