A MAN’S' DUPLICITY. AUCKLAND, ,September 14. * The Athenic arrived to-night from Southampton, with 678 passengers, including 496 immigrants', mostly assisted. Many of the latter are women who have come out to marry New Zealanders. Two of them are gadder and wiser than when they left Home. They became friendly during the voyage, and discovered, in consequence, that they were both coming out to marry the same man. One had her passage paid by him; the other paid her own.
MOERAKI HELD UP. Wellington, sept. 17. The M oerak'i did not sail for Sydney and Hobart yesterday owing to differences between the stokehold crew and stewards'. Firemen and Trimmers objected to sailing with the ship’s cook and the stewards objected to sailing without him. This has caused a deadlock and the vessel may be further delayed. The Moeraki’s articles expired on Wednesday, on her arrival from Sydney, and when they were to be renewed, the men declined to sign. Th c opposing parties have expressed their intention to sec the matter through'.
sugar workers strike
ARBITRATION COURT’S AWARD. Auckland, sept. 16. The Arbitration Court has filed an .Award in the sugar workers’ dispute, and has granted tub Workers’ Union a forty-four hour week, with a minimum wage of £4. The Award is only for six months, as the Court says it is not satisfied that it has been fully informed of the nature and character of the work. The Court says it has grave doubts about reducing the week’s work to 44 hours, but adds, that, in view of the Union’s assurance that the output will not be reduced, it has agreed to the proposal. The sugar workers’ Union considered the award of the Arbitration Court tonight. After a protracted discussion, they decided to declare the strike off. They will return to work in a body on. Monday.
CARGO PILFERERS SENTENCED. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 16. - ' Five members of the crew of the steamer Suffolk were charged at Lyttelton before Mr S. E. McCarthy S.M., with stealing or receiving goods deemed tp be part of the ship’s cargo. It was brought out in the evidence that there had been considerable pilfering of the cargo, and losses to the extent of £3OO had already been discovered. Each of the accused was sentenced to three months’, imprisonment
