A big crowd watched the heats of the Brisbane Handicap, which is worth £350, over a course of about two miles on the Brisbane river, in which leading scullers competed. The first heat proved an easy task for Felton, with McDevitt second, and C. Messenger third. Time 20min 50sec. The second heat resulted:—Christenson (Queensv land) 1, 0- Matterson 2, Short 3. Barry from scratch ' only managed to gej fourth * place, twelve lengths behind Short. Time 18min 42sec. The third 1* heat r f suited—Arnst 1, Ripley 2, West 3' with Towns fourth.
