CHANCE TO “MAKE GOOD.” DUNEDIN, September 10. - The naval hero, William Theodore Thompson, wearing the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the French Croix de Guerre, the Mpdaille Militaire, and the, 1914-15 star, the French decorations being for the raid on Zeebrugge, reappeared in the Magistrate’s Court today to answer two charges—one of tho theft of £2 in money, and the other of the theft of a watcli and chain, valued at £2O, the property of Elizabeth Maude Pledge. Chief-Detective Bishop said that he had made exhaustive enquiries into the war record of the .accused, and as a result had not the slightest doubt that, accused’s story was true. Accused' had promised that if lie were given a chance on this occasion he would keep -straight and give up drinking. He was a firstclass engineer, and could easily obtain employment. He was quite satisfied fo take the word of honour of the accused that he would give up drink. The Rev. Mr Cummiiig said that the oeople- who brought the proceedings against the accused did not desire that he should be punished. It was the intention of the accused, if given his liberty to go to them and make an explanation. He was satisfied the accused could “make good.” The money spent would he refunded and the,, watch and chain returned. The Magistrate speaking to the accused, said: I do not intend to deliver n sermon to you. You have an excellent war record of which any person might be proud. You have suffered severely through the war by losing your sister, four brothers, and mother, and no doubt these matters had considerable influence in placing you in your present position. I intend to give you a chance. 1 am sure you could become a member of the community wo would be proud to have here.” Accused was admitted to probation for a period of two years on the con. dition that he made restitution of the stolen articles and took out a prohibition order against himself. ___
