CHELSEA SUGAR. AUCKLAND, Sept. 9. Judge Stringer stated in the Arbitration Court that the Court would visit Chelsea sugar works on Saturday and that representatives of the Union and CompiUly be iiWited to lie present. This is despite the fact that the workers remain on strike. The Secretary of the Union lias wired Hon Lee a review of the dispute, asking it be read to the House of Representatives.
BAY OF PLENTY tSEAT. A LIBERAL CANDIDATE. GISBORNE, September 7. Air A. M. Lewis, a well-known business man of Gisborne and To Karaka, was selected at a meeting of. the Liberal Association at To Karaka to stand as the Liberal candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat.
DUNEDIN-AUCKLAND SERVICE. DUNEDIN, September 7. The Union Steamship Company has decided to discontinue the DunedinAuckland passenger service, which the general manager of the company maintains is being run at a heavy loss. There is a disinclination on the part of the travelling public to patronise the boats oh this service, .the M-onowai, Mokoia, and latterly the Navua, (which has replaced the Mokoia). They prefer to leave these steamers at Wellington and take the ferry steamers to Lyttelton and come South by train, and vice versa. The passenger , service is to bo replaced by two cargo vessels, hut it is not known when'this service will ho commenced jis so many of the company's boats are at present engage! in the coal trade.
ELECTRICAL PQWER. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 9. Sir Arnold Grindley, who has been visiting at Southland during the last few days ,was entertained at dinner to-* night by the Southland League and the Electric Power Board. In the course of a speech, Sir Arnold Grindley referred in congratulatory terms to the Southland Electrical Scheme and predicted a great impetus to the prosperity of the Dominion with an extension of the use of electrical power. OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD’S LOAN. DUNEDIN, September 8. The Otago Harbour Board has approved of a proposal to invite tenders next month for the purchase at par of 2002 debentures of £IOO each. The loan is to provide funds for the purpose of redeeming two loans maturing iu London on January Ist. next. The labentures will have a currency of seven years, and will bear interest at sj) per cent, per annum. This £200,200 loan is confidently expected to he realised in the Dominion.
FINANCIAL NOTES. WELLINGTON, September 8. The Wanganui Borough Council is the latest local body to offer debentures for sale hut the amount to he soli is not sth-ted. Debentures of local bodies are now thick on the mark yfc for quite £600,000 must' now he on offer, and there is a great deal more to come. PalmerstoSn North borough has just obtained the consent of the ratepayers to borrow £79,000. Where is all the money to come from? is tlir question that many people are asking. It may not be generally kiiowii, but a fairly large sum of money is being invested in gum propositions in some jf the swamp lands worked over by "he diggers. Considerable quantities of cLip gum and small nuts are procurable aiid a method of recovering these had been devised. The system of sluicing has been adopted, and'special machinery invented with the result that from two •to three tons of Ichip gum can, be obtained daily, and as this, gum is worth from £SO to £6O per ton, tbe profits are large. Wellington investors are interested in one such gum company, which is expected to-begin operations next month.
PRICE OF GOLD. WELLINGTON, Sept. 8 The Higli Commissioner for New Zealand cabled', under date of 7th inst., as follows:—“Official price of gold to-day is £5 15s 6d; nominal. No shipments available.”
BUTTER PRICES. WELLINGTON, Sept. 8. Notice was given by the Prime Minister this afternoon to set up a- special committee to report within three weeks on the present and future prices of butter in view of the probability of tlio exportable surplus being purchased by the British Government, The first duty of the committee will be to con-1 jsider butter, prices, after hearing the evidence of Government and other experts. Afterwards the committee may proceed to consider other cost of living questions. The Committee will comprise. Messrs J., It .Hamilton, Hawken, Hookly, Ivellett, AicCoombs, jMcLebd, Nash, Poland, and the mover Mr Massey. Its first business will be to consider butter prices, after hearing the evidence of the Government and other experts. Afterwards it may proceed to deal with other cost of living questions.
N.Z.R.U. WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The New Zealand Rugbq Union Management Committee has endorsed a proposal by the chairman Mr Slade that a native team should visit New South Wales next year 'under the N.Z. Union jurisdiction. It was decided to play the seriii final of the Moastar Cup Competition, Palmerston North High School v. Gram*mar School, at Palmerston North on September 18th, and the final between Christchurch Boys ’High School and the winners of the semi-final at Wellington on Wednesday, September 22nd.
