In order there might be no suspicion of victimi- ’ sation it was explained that the Company had a rule which provided that no : man over fifty years of age should be employed in the works. It was on account of this man’s age. that his services were to be dispensed with, and not because be was one of the strikers. ;

Government to attend a conference on trade and commerce at Toronto, will also make enquiries in the United States as to the possibilities of increased trade there. He will then come on to New Zealand, and, on arrival, will submit his report) to the Government. :

PRICE OF CHEESE. DUNEDIN, September 4. . Hie public of New Zealand are now, having to pay higher .prices for cheese. It is not being released by the Go-, vernment very plentifully, and wholesale men cannot buy it at less than Is 2d. per lb., an increase of 3d. As a -result the retailers have been compelled to raise their prices .to Is 3d and Is 4d, and even at those rates, there is not much in it for them, ns tbe figures show. It seems almost certain that consumers must be prepared for a further rise. At the back of the advance, so far as can be learn.ed, is the expectation of big prices in the Home Country.
